Cherish, Elevate e Activate di Bottega Organica: Roberta nel deserto di colori... / Cherish, Elevate and Activate by Bottega Organica: Roberta in the desert of colors...

Durante il suo viaggio attraverso Fantàsia, Bastian, il protagonista de La storia infinita, ad un certo punto di ritrova immerso nella magia dei colori quando raggiunge Goab, il deserto colorato – interessante ossimoro. Dune di sabbia di meravigliosi colori brillanti, sempre diversi, si parano davanti a Bastian, che ha però paura e vuole allontanarsi perché Goab è un posto terribile, nonostante l'esplosione di colore. Aprendo per la prima volta le bottigliette scure fatte di vetro e versando sulle mani Cherish, Elevate e Activate mi sono trovata anche io circondata da bellissimi colori. Il primo aspetto che mi ha colpito di questi prodotti è legato al loro aspetto: colori così naturali, ma al tempo stesso così brillanti. La differenza tra me e Bastian sta nella reazione, non nella bellezza dei colori: io ne sono stata affascinata e non volevo abbandonare la mia personale versione di Goab.

Ma facciamo un passo indietro! Quando la scorsa estate Silvia* (la responsabile commerciale di Bottega Organica in Italia) mi ha contattata per presentarmi il brand e per offrirmi di provare alcuni prodotti, non sapevo nulla o quasi nulla di Bottega Organica, il nome non mi suonava nuovo, ma non avevo senz'altro familiarità con la sua filosofia e la sua storia. Dunque, il mio viaggio è iniziato con un po' di sana ricerca, incoraggiata da Silvia, che mi ha suggerito di leggere le sezioni dedicate sul sito dell'azienda.

Bottega Organica 

Ho subito scoperto che la protagonista indiscussa dei prodotti di Bottega Organica è una specie di salvia, originaria della Bolivia, chiamata salvia haenkei. Ma come ha fatto la salvia haenkei a diventare l'ingrediente fondamentale attorno al quale ruotano tutti gli altri nelle formule di Bottega Organica? Beh, c'è un altro protagonista in questa storia, effettivamente: il dott. Andrea Alimonti, un genetista di fama mondiale. La salvia haenkei, oltre ad avere dei bellissimi fiori rossi, ha grandi proprietà. Dopo molta ricerca, nel 2013 il dott. Alimonti ha fatto una scoperta di grande importanza riguardo questo tipo di salvia: la salvia haenkei, infatti, è in grado di rallentare la senescenza della pelle (l'invecchiamento) del 50%. Nel 2016 il dott. Alimonti ha pubblicato un articolo, dal titolo “Identification of Salvia haenkei as gerosuppressant agent by using an integrated senescence‐screening assay” (Identificazione della salvia haenkei come gerosoppressore attraverso una analisi integrata di screening della senescenza), sulla rivista specializzata statunitense Aging.

Nei prodotti di Bottega Organica, la salvia haenkei non è sola nella lotta contro l'invecchiamento cutaneo: l'olio di oliva extra-vergine e altri preziosi estratti vegetali che aiutano a inibire l'invecchiamento, grazie alle loro proprietà antiossidanti, vengono ottenuti da piante che crescono spontaneamente nella loro azienda agricola in Liguria (che, per casualità, è la regione d'origine di mia madre e della sua famiglia), senza l'uso di pesticidi o di fertilizzanti di origine sintetica e rispettando, inoltre, ogni fase della vita delle piante – del resto, come sappiamo, chi va piano va sano e va lontano.

E ora i prodotti...

«È un enorme gioco degli scacchi a cui si gioca, per tutto il mondo - sempre che questo sia il mondo. Oh, che divertimento! Come vorrei essere uno di loro! Non mi dispiacerebbe essere un pedone, se potessi partecipare - anche se, naturalmente, essere la regina mi piacerebbe di più.»

Un po' di tempo fa ho postato sul mio profilo Instagram questa foto per suggerire l'idea di un gioco degli scacchi, su grossa scala, come in Attraverso lo specchio e quel che Alice vi trovò (la fonte della citazione riportata qui sopra) – seguito del famigerato Le avventure di Alice nel paese delle meraviglie di Lewis Carrol – in cui Cherish, Elevate e Activate potessero essere delle pedine. Nella citazione che ho scelto Alice dice che le piacerebbe giocare in ogni caso, ma che essere la regina le piacerebbe di più, probabilmente perché i bambini amano fingere di essere qualcuno di importante. La regina, ad ogni modo, è il pezzo più potente nel gioco perché si può muovere come una torre e come un alfiere e quindi Alice non ha affatto torto!

La regina

La mia regina è Cherish, non procrastinerò questa rivelazione. Cherish è un prodotto multiuso che si può “muovere” in ogni direzione nella mia routine di bellezza (per tornare alla mia matafora). Dei tre prodotti che Silvia mi ha regalato è quello con la formula più complessa (anche se questa è un'esagerazione, come vedrete) e che la mia pelle ama di più. In primo luogo Cherish è diverso da altri prodotti in generale, in ragione della sua consistenza unica: si tratta, infatti, di un balsamo viso liquido. Siamo abituati a prelevare i balsami viso da un barattolino, invece Cherish viene fuori da un normale dispenser per oli, senza otturarlo o rendere difficile l'erogazione.

Il primo ingrediente di questo balsamo viso liquido è l'olio extravergine di oliva di cui sopra, che è anche l'unico olio vegetale presente. L'olio di oliva è estremamente ricco di antiossidanti ed è perfetto per tutti i tipi di pelle perché non è pesante o troppo grasso. L'olio di oliva è sempre stato un ingrediente essenziale nella mia vita, dal momento che sono nata in Puglia, una regione dove gli ulivi sono ovunque e l'olio d'oliva viene usato in ogni ricetta. L'olio d'oliva è seguito da un burro e una cera vegetali, che rendono il prodotto cremoso (ma non eccessivamente): burro di karitè e cera d'api biologici. Altri ingredienti ideali per ogni tipo di pelle perché sono nutrienti ma non comedogeni. La formula è arricchiata da diversi estratti vegetali biologici: albicocca, carota e vaniglia – antiossidanti – camomilla e malva – lenitivi – salvia – purificante – e salvia haenkei – anti-età, di cui vi ho raccontato sopra.

Come utilizzo Cherish → come prodotto nutriente, non in modo continuativo, sulle labbra e sul viso, sia su pelle umida che asciutta, soprattutto durante la routine serale e all'ora di pranzo, dopo essermi lavata il viso (spesso mi strucco anche se devo uscire di nuovo nel pomeriggio), soprattutto se poi faccio un pisolino dopo pranzo. In entrambi i casi Cherish viene assorbito piuttosto velocemente dalla pelle, nonostante sia un balsamo, e non lascia una patina grassa sulla pelle (tranne in alcune occasioni, per esempio durante il ciclo o a causa di altri squilibri).

Effetti: l'effetto più visibile è la luminosità. Sembra di essersi truccate, come con quelle bb cream che non sono coprenti ma uniformano molto bene. Lascia la mia pelle veramente molto morbida e ben nutrita. Sono sicura, dunque, che su pelli più secche, se usato con regolarità, Cherish può senz'altro aiutare a risolvere problemi relativi a pelle screpolata o spaccata.

Fragranza e aromaterapia: Cherish profuma di impasto per torte/dolcetti. Si percepisce l'olio di oliva, che ha un odore caratteristico, e la vaniglia. Questo odore risulta per me rilassante, ma è anche in grado di mettermi di buon umore, è un “profumo accogliente”, se così si può dire.

Come NON uso Cherish → come base per il trucco o come prodotto idratante quotidiano. Questo essenzialmente per una ragione: Cherish è perfetto per ogni tipo di pelle, ma è particolarmente adatto alle pelli più secche ed è per questo che non avrebbe senso per me utilizzarlo ogni giorno. Inoltre non voglio terminarlo troppo in fretta, lo amo troppo!!

Una regina ed un re....

Se è vero che Cherish è la mia regina, è altrettanto vero che l'olio viso Elevate è il mio re!

Elevate non è l'unico olio viso presente nella linea di Bottega Organica, ci sono anche Energize e Nourish, ma Silvia ha scelto per me Elevate dopo che le ho spiegato che esigenze ha la mia pelle. Elevate è ricco di estratto di menta, stimolante e rinfrescante, è lenitivo grazie all'olio essenziale di vetiver, è nutriente grazie all'olio extravergine di oliva ed è protettivo e rivitalizzante grazie alla salvia e alla salvia haenkei. Sì, un olio viso con soli cinque ingredienti che, tuttavia, fa quel che deve!

Come uso Elevate → sia di mattina che di sera, sia su pelle umida che asciutta. Di mattina è particolarmente indicato nei casi in cui le condizioni meteo (vento, temperature basse...) richiedano una protezione accurata della pelle.

Ho usato Elevate anche come olio detergente, rimuovendolo preferibilmente con una spugna di mare (le mie preferite sono quelle di Cose della Natura) ed è davvero piacevole. Rimuove il trucco e lo sporco sulla base del fatto che “simile dissolve simile” (l'olio d'oliva e gli oli vegetali in generale sono molto simili al sebo umano e sono perciò una scelta bilanciata quando si tratta di detersione). Ha la giusta consistenza per essere utilizzato in questo modo perché non è troppo liquido, è leggermente purificante e non priva la pelle del suo olio naturale (il sebo).

Effetti: quello che mi piace di più di Elevate è che è davvero leggero. L'olio d'oliva è senz'altro uno dei motivi, ma sono certa che l'olio essenziale di vetiver gioca un ruolo fondamentale. Quando massaggio Elevate sul viso respiro profondamente per lasciare che il profumo balsamico influenzi anche il mio umore. La sensazione immediata sulla pelle è di freschezza e purezza, inoltre i pori risultano meno visibili, la pelle più compatta (ecco perché lo suggerirei anche per i giorni in cui la pelle è in pessime condizioni – brufoli e co. – e alle pelli miste e grasse).

Fragranza e aromaterapia: in un primo momento Elevate ha un odore balsamico, sostanzialmente di pepe (credo sia la combo vetiver + menta + olio d'oliva), ma poi il vetiver diventa più percettibile. Non sono una grande fan delle fragranze di questo tipo, tuttavia posso assicurarvi che dopo aver usato Elevate per un po', non solo mi sono abituata al suo odore, ma ho anche iniziato ad apprezzarne gli effetti sul mio umore e ,dunque, ad amarlo. Quando viene applicato di notte Elevate fa sentire più rilassati, come se tutte le preoccupazioni del giorno venissero spazzate via da questo odore legnoso/balsamico.

Un re e una torre...

Come potete immaginare con facilità, se Cherish è la mia regina e Elevate il mio re, Activate è il prodotto di Bottega Organica che preferisco meno, tra quelli che ho provato. Inizialmente pensavo di paragonarlo ad un afliere, ma poi mi son resa conto che è più simile ad una torre (parliamo ancora in base alla metafora con gli scacchi). Ci sono due torri negli scacchi (come gli alfieri), ma una torre può essere coinvolta in una mossa chiamata “arrocco”, che coinvolge anche il re...

Activate è l'unico prodotto dei tre che contiene acqua ed è, dunque, un siero a base acquosa. La glicerina (biologica), altamente idratante e protettiva, è il primo ingrediente in formula, seguita dall'acqua e subito dopo dalla salvia haenkei, Activate quindi è un siero molto concentrato. Oltre alla salvia haenkei sono presenti anche estratti biologici di salvia e di capraggine, una pianta il cui nome botanico è galega officinalis e che, secondo studi recenti, sarebbe in grado di inibire la produzione di melanina e ha un buon potere idratante sulla pelle. Per dare una consisteza gelatinosa al siero è stata utilizzata la gomma di cesalpinia spinosa.

Come uso Activate → come siero viso, da solo o prima di altri prodotti, soprattutto durante la routine serale, anche sul contorno occhi. La questione è che Activate è leggermente appiccicoso – porbabilmente per via della glicerina. Non ho nulla contro la glicerina e, a differenza di altre persone, non la vedo come il male assoluto. Tuttavia, usando Activate ed altri prodotti affini che non sono vere e proprie emulsioni, ma appunto sieri a base acquosa che contengono glicerina, mi sono resa conto di non amare molto la glicerina quando non è parte di una formula più complessa come una crema. La glicerina, infatti, lascia la mia pelle piuttosto tesa e lucida. Ho provato Activate sia su pelle umida che asciutta (sebbene Bottega Organica consigli di applicarlo sulla pelle asciutta) e la mia conclusione è che preferisco applicarlo sulla pelle umida.

Perché Activate è una torre? In pratica ho messo in atto la mossa dell'”arrocco” e ho messo insieme Activate con il mio re, Elevate, rendendomi conto che sono una combinazione fortunata! Quando lo applico da solo, in qualche modo Activate risulta eccessivo per la mia pelle (tranne che sul contorno occhi: funziona molto bene lì e mi piace moltissimo l'effetto tensore che esplica), ma Elevate riesce a bilanciarlo. La combinazione di Activate ed Elevate rende la mia pelle morbida, nutrita, rassodata e radiosa.

Per riassumere, per me Activate non ha funzionato benissimo combinato con altri sieri (l'ho provato anche con un siero a base di bava di lumaca), ha funzionato abbastanza bene da solo e ha funzionato molto bene con Elevate.

Effetti: leggere sopra + Activate è un eccellente trattamento per le mani! Una goccia per ogni mano è sufficiente a nutrire la pelle e a renderla morbida come il velluto!

Fragranza e aromaterapia: è difficile descrivere l'odore di Activate. Direi che è dolce, ricorda il miele (oh, a proposito, anche il sapore di Activate è dolce: ne ho accidentamente leccato una goccia...), ad ogni modo non permane a lungo sulla pelle, specie se dopo si applica Elevate. Tutto sommato mi piace la sua fragranza e mi piace massaggiarlo su viso, collo e petto.

During his journey through Fantastica, Bastian, the protagonist of The Neverending Story, at a certain point finds himself immersed in the magic of colors when he reaches Goab, the desert of colors – interesting oxymoron. Dunes of sand with beautiful bright colors, which are never the same, appear in front of Bastian, who is afraid and wants to leave that place because it's a terrible one, despite the color explosion. When I opened the refined dark bottles made of glass and I dropped Cherish, Elevate and Activate in my hands for the first time I also found myself surrounded by beautiful colors. The very first thing that impressed me about these products was their colors: so natural but at the same time so bright and peculiar. The difference between me and Bastian, in fact, lies in the reaction we had, not in the beauty of the colors we saw: I was beguiled by them and wouldn't leave my personal version of Goab.

But let's take a step back! When Silvia* (Bottega Organica's sales manager in Italy) contacted me last summer to introduce the brand to me and to offer me to try some products, I knew nothing or almost nothing about the brand, the name was not new to me but I wasn't familiar with its philosophy and story. So I started my journey with some research, encouraged by Silvia, who suggested me to read the dedicated sections on the brand's website.

Bottega Organica

I immediately discovered that the undisputed protagonist of Bottega Organica's products is a species of sage, native to Bolivia, called salvia hankei (or prawn sage, in English). But how did prawn sage come to be the pivotal ingredient around which all other ingredients in the brand's formulas revolve around? Well there's another protagonist in this story: Dr. Andrea Alimonti, a world-renowned geneticist. Prawn sage, besides having some very nice red flowers, has great properties too. After much research, in 2013 Dr. Alimonti made a significant discovery about this plant: prawn sage is able to decrease skin senescence (aging) by 50%. In 2016 Dr. Alimonti published an article, bearing the title “Identification of Salvia haenkei as gerosuppressant agent by using an integrated senescence‐screening assay”, about his research on the US scientific journal Aging.

In Bottega Organica's products prawn sage is not alone in its fight against skin aging: extra-virgin olive oil and other precious plant extracts that help inhibit aging, thanks to their antioxidant properties, are obtained from plants that grow wild or are organically grown by Bottega Organica in their farm in Liguria, an Italian region (incidentally, my mother and her family's homeland), without pesticides and synthetic fertilizers and respecting every step of the plants' life – in Italian there's a saying that that goes like chi va piano va sano e va lontano (who proceeds slowly is on a good path and can go very far).

Now to the products...

«It’s a great huge game of chess that’s being played—all over the world—if this is the world at all, you know. Oh, what fun it is! How I wish I was one of them! I wouldn’t mind being a Pawn, if only I might join—though of course I should like to be a Queen, best.»

Some time ago I posted on my Instagram profile the picture above to suggest the idea of a game of chess, a huge one, like in Through the Looking-Glass and What Alice Found There (the source of the quote above) – the sequel to the renowned Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll – where Cherish, Elevate and Activate may be some of the pieces. In the quotation I chose, Alice says that she would like to play anyway but she'd rather be a Queen, probably because she's a child and children love pretending to be someone important. Well, anyway the Queen is the most poweful piece becaue it can move like a Rook and like a Bishop so Alice isn't wrong at all!

The queen

My queen is Cherish, I won't try to procrastinate this revelation. Cherish is a multipurpose product that can “move” in any direction in my skincare (to go back to my metaphor). Of the three products Silvia was so kind to give to me as a gift it is the one with the most complex formula (even if this is an overstatement as you will see) and the one that my skin loves more. First of all Cherish is different from other products in general because of its unique texture: it is a liquid face balm. We are used to take face balms from a pot, while Cherish comes out of a normal oil dispenser, without clogging it or making it difficult to use.

The first ingredient is the above mentioned extra virgin olive oil, which is the only vegetable oil in this balm. Olive oil is highly rich antioxidants and it's recommended for every skin type because it's not heavy or too greasy. Olive oil has always been an essential ingredient in my life since I live in southern Italy, in a region called Puglia, where olive trees are basically everywhere and olive oil is used in every recipe. Olive oil is followed by a vegetable butter and wax, which make this product creamy (but not too much): organic shea butter and beeswax. Other great ingredients for every skin type, nourishing but not comedogenic. The formula is enriched by several organic plant extracts: antioxidant apricot, carrot and vanilla, soothing chamomile and mallow, purifying sage, and anti-aging prawn sage.

How I have used Cherish → as an occasional moisturizer on my lips and on my face, both on moist and on dry skin, mostly for my p.m. routine or after cleansing my face at lunch time (I often remove makeup even if I have to go out again in the afternoon) especially if I had the time to take a nap after eating. In both cases, Cherish gets absorbed by skin quite easily, despite being a balm, and does not leave a greasy film on my skin (except on some occasions, for example when I had particularly oily skin due to my period or imbalances).

Effects: The most visible effect is the glow it gives. In fact it seems you put makeup on, like those bb creams that are sheer but are able to even skin tone. It perfectly nourishes my skin and leaves if extremely soft. Therefore I'm sure that on drier skin types, if used on a regular basis, Cherish can solve problems related to chapped or cracked skin.

Scent and aromatherapy: Cherish smells (naturally – no added fragrances) like muffin/cake batter. One can perceive olive oil, which has a distinctive smell, and vanilla. I find this scent calming and uplifting at the same time, it's a “cosy smell”, if such a thing exists.

How I have NOT used Cherish → as a makeup base (or at least nor regularly: I used it twice under a setting powder and a liquid foundation that dries my skin a bit and it worked well) and as a moisturizer on a daily basis. Basically for one reason: Cherish is perfect for every skin type but it's best for dry skin and that's why it would be pointless for me to use it regularly. Moreover I don't want to run out of it, I love it so much!!

A queen and a king...

If it's true that Cherish is my queen, it is also true that the Elevate Face Oil is my king!

Elevate is not the only face oil in Bottega Organica's range, Energize and Nourish are also available, but Silvia chose Elevate for me after I told her about my skin type. Elevate is rich in stimulating and refreshing peppermint extract and is able to soothe, thanks to vetiver essential oil, to nourish skin with extra virgin olive oil, and protect and revitalize it with sage and prawn sage extracts. Yes, five ingredients for a face oil, which is nevertheless very effective!

How I have used Elevate → both in the morning and at night, both on moist and on dry skin. In the morning it is especially suitable when weather conditions (wind, cold temperatures...) require skin to be accurately protected.

I've also used it as a cleansing oil, best removed with a sea sponge (my favorite ones are those by Cose della Natura), and it's really pleasant. It removes dirt and makeup because “like dissolves like” (olive oil and vegetable oils in general are similar to human sebum so they are a balanced choice when it comes to cleansing). It has the right texture to be used as a cleansing oil because it's not too liquid, it's slightly purifying but it does not strip skin of its natural oils.

Effects: what I like most about Elevate is that it is really lightweight. Olive oil is definitely responsible for this sensation but I'm sure that vetiver essential oil plays a very important role too. When I massage Elevate I breathe deeply to let the balsamic scent condition my mood too. My skin immediately feels refreshed and purified, pores are less visible and skin looks more even (that's why I would suggest Elevate for the worst skin days – with pimples and spots – and to people with combo or oily skin as well).

Scent and aromatherapy: at first Elevate smells balsamic, mainly like pepper (I think it's the combo vetiver + mint + olive oil) but then vetiver is more perceivable. I'm not a big fan of this kind of scent but I can tell you that after using Elevate for a while not only did I grow accustomed to its scent, but I also began to appreciate its effect on my mood and to like it. When applied at night it makes you feel more relaxed, as if all the worries of the day were swept away by this woody/balsamic smell.

A king and a rook...

As you can easily imagine, if Cherish is a queen and Elevate a king, Activate is my least favorite among these by Bottega Organiga I tried. At first I thought I would compare Activate to the bishop,b ut then I realized that Activate is more similar to a rook. There are two of these pieces on the chess board (just like the bishops) but a rook is involved in the move called “castling” which also involves the king...

Activate is the only product of the three containing water and it is therefore a water-based serum. Glycerin (organic), highly hydrating and protective, is the first ingredient in the formula, followed by water and prawn sage extract, so Activate is a really concentrated serum indeed. Despite prawn sage, Activate features sage and French lilac extracts too – a plant whose botanical name is galega officinalis, which according to recent studies is able to inhibit the production of melanin and has a conditioning effect. Cesalpinia spinosa gum, obtained from a tree called tara, is used to give Activate a gel-like texture.

How I have used Activate → as a face serum (it is supposed to be used before other products like Cherish or Elevate), mainly at night, also on the eye contour. The thing about Activate is that it is slightly sticky – probably because of glycerin. I don't have anything against glycerin and, unlike many people, I don't see it as pure evil but, using Elevate and other products, which are not proper emulsion but rather water-based serums, I realized that I'm not a big fan of glycerin when it's not part of an emulsion/cream. It leaves my skin a bit tight and glossy. I tried Activate both on moist and on dry skin (even if Bottega Organica suggests to apply it on dry skin) and I prefer to apply it on moist skin anyway.

Why is Activate my rook? I basically made the “castling” move and I combined Activate with my king, Elevate, and I realized they make a really good match! When applied alone, Activate is somewhat too much for my skin (except for my eye area: it works good there and I highly appreciate its tightening effect) but Elevate succeeds in balancing it. Activate and Elevate, if used together, make my skin feel soft, nourished, more plump and radiant (thanks, French lilac!).

To sum up, for me Activate didn't work very good combined with other serums (I tried it with a serum containing snail secretion), it worked more or less good alone and it worked good with Elevate.

Effects: see above + it's a very good treatment for dry hands! A drop for each hand is enough to nourish and make skin velvet-soft!

Scent and aromatherapy: it's difficult to describe Activate's scent. I would probably say it's sweet, it reminds me of honey (oh Activate also tastes sweet, I accidentally licked a drop of it...) but anyway it does not linger on skin. Altogether I like its scent and I like massaging Activate on my face, neck and chest.
