Come la Radiate + Refine Beautifying Face Mask fece capolino nella mia vita

Ho una mania per gli inci lunghi. Per quelle etichette che ti fanno desiderare di avere una lente d'ingrandimento a portata di mano per farsi leggere. Per quegli inci dove trovi nomi botanici che non avevi nemmeno mai sentito. Ma un giorno, mentre facevo spese su Love Lula, la mia attenzione è stata inaspettatamente catturata da una maschera viso che consta di soli tre ingredienti. TRE: polvere di latte di cocco – polvere di legno di sandalo rosso – polvere di radice di curcuma (vegane e di grado alimentare).

Sono stata ipnotizzata da quei tre semplici ingredienti sull'inci [e dall'etichetta color oro rosa], che continuavo a pronunciare ad alta voce come un mantra, e in men che non si dica la maschera se ne stava comoda nel mio carrello di Love Lula, insieme ad altre preziosità naturali.

Si tratta della Radiate + Refine Beautifying Face Mask di Isla Apothecary, un piccolo brand artigianale, creato da Kate nel Regno Unito, che attribuisce molta importanza al rituale della cura personale e all'aromaterapia. Kate crea i suoi prodotti in piccole quantità, con cadenza settimanale e tutto ciò che il brand offre è realizzato internamente, senza intermediari, ed è (anche) questo a rendere questo brand speciale.

Come andò il nostro primo incontro e altre storie sulla consistenza

Era un giorno freddo e piovoso di autunno poco prima del mio compleanno quando ci incontrammo la prima volta. Radiate + Refine era arrivata con un ordine di Love Lula la mattina stessa. Non appena le tenebre calarono (le maschere viso sono la compagnia perfetta per le routine serali, no?) corsi in bagno per concedermi un rituale di bellezza che la mia Radiate + Refine prometteva sarebbe stato lenitivo ed illuminante.

Quando aprii il barattolo fui investita dall'odore della curcuma, stemperato dal dolce aroma della polvere di latte di cocco. La polvere di sandalo rosso non è facile da percepire per il mio naso, ma lo è già di più per i miei occhi: nella fine polvere arancione chiaro, sono visibili dei granelli di colore arancione scuro/rosso. La mescolai con una piccola quantità di acqua, la stessa che uso normalmente per la maggior parte della maschere – diciamo una quindicina di gocce per un cucchiaino da tè di maschera.

Non avevo fatto i conti col fatto che la la mia nuova amica arancione era priva di argilla e che quindi non ci sarebbe stato nulla ad assorbire l'acqua [infatti potete anche scegliere di mescolare la Radiate + Refine con una maschera a base di ghassoul o di un'altra argilla, come la OrangeCoffee Mask di Terre Verdi – altro meraviglioso brand britannico – come ho fatto diverse volte io – e di cui trovate la recensione qui]. Quello che ottenni la prima volta fu, dunque, un uniforme liquido arancione che ovviamente non buttai, ma massaggiai su viso e collo, come se fosse un detergente, un detergente molto piacevole per altro. Mi sono poi resa conto che la Radiate + Refine non ha bisogno di molta acqua e, anzi, forse si combina meglio ad altre sostanze (ho provato latte/crema detergente e yogurt) oppure con una piccolissima quantità di acqua (suggerisco di aggiungere una goccia alla volta) e qualche goccia di olio viso (che contenga preferibilmente olio di ricino che, con la sua consistenza, renderà la maschera più cremosa).

Come la Radiate + Refine riuscì a diventare un ospite fisso nella mia routine

Gli innumerevoli benefici della curcuma (antiinfiammatoria, lenitiva, anti-rossore e molto altro), del sandalo rosso (lenitivo, rende la pelle più turgida, inoltre assorbe il sebo in eccesso) e della polvere di latte di cocco (ricca di sostanze benefiche per la pelle come le vitamine A e C, il calcio, il ferro, il rame e proteine naturali, ha ottime proprietà anti-age, poiché migliora l'elasticità della pelle e aiuta a rendere l'incarnato uniforme) sono visibili sulla mia pelle dopo ogni uso di Radiate + Refine. Per essere più precisi, di solito sono evidenti il giorno dopo. Immediatamente dopo l'uso, infatti, la pelle diventa un po' rossa (anche se non c'è nessuna reale infiammazione). La uso quasi sempre di sera perché mi sono resa conto che è più efficace quando le si dà il tempo di agire: è come se, una volta risciacquata, continuasse a lavorare nel turno di notte. Di solito la lascio agire una decina di minuti. Quando la mescolo a qualcosa che è in grado di renderla più umida e cremosa la lascio sulla pelle per più tempo – perché non si secca – fino a mezz'ora [nella foto qui sotto la potete vedere mescolata al Balm-to-Milk Cleanser, detergente cremoso, di A.Florence, prodotto meraviglioso di un brand eccellente che potete trovare qui e di cui parlerò presto].

Si tratta di una di quelle maschere che non faccio spesso, ma che mi concedo quando voglio che il mio viso abbia una luminosità particolare e quando desidero pulire la pelle senza usare l'argilla che a volte può essere troppo aggressiva. Sicuramente è una maschera che consiglio anche alle pelli sensibili, dal momento che lenisce i rossori (specie quando la si usa di sera prima di coricarsi). La sua consistenza la rende un 2in1: massaggiandola sulla pelle si fa un leggerissimo scrub.

Il paradosso della curcuma

La curcuma è estremamente tintoria – il suo bel pigmento giallo brillante rimane sui tessuti ed è molto difficile da togliere (ecco perché è sempre stata usata come colorante). Anche la pelle e le unghie restano macchiate e ci vogliono giorni per liberarsi di quel colore giallo. Il paradosso sta nel fatto che mentre virtualmente ogni cosa si macchia quando uso Radiate + Refine (il lavandino, il bastoncino che uso per mescolarla, la mia spugna o il mio panno e, prima che iniziassi ad usare un pennello per applicarla su viso e collo, persino le mie dita si macchiavano, facendo sembrare le mia mani quelle di un Simpson), la pelle del viso non si è mai macchiata. È misterioso, ma vero, dunque prestate attenzione a non tingere ciò che non volete diventi giallo (e a questo punto La maschera viso, commedia in un atto * entra la madre di Roberta * , madre di Roberta urlando: "gli asciugamani roooosaaaaa!!!"). Se, invece, volete tingere di giallo qualcosa di bianco, beh allora fate pure e lasciate che Radiate + Refine vi aiuti!

How the Radiate + Refine Beautifying Face Mask made its way into my life

I have a mania for long ingredient lists. For those labels that make you want to reach for a magnifier to be read carefully. For those ingredient lists where you find botanical names you had never heard of. But one day, while shopping at Love Lula, my attention was unexpectedely caught by a face mask that features three ingredients only. THREE: (vegan and food grade) coconut milk powder – red sandalwood powder – turmeric root powder.

I was mesmerized by that three simple items on the list [and by the rose gold label] that I kept pronouncing like a mantra, and in less than no time the mask sat cosy in my Love Lula cart, together with other natural goodies.

I am talking about the Radiate + Refine Beautifying Face Mask by Isla Apothecary, an indie brand, created by Kate in the UK, that attaches importance to skincare rituals and aromatherapy. Kate creates products in weekly small batches and everything you get from her is made in-house, and this really makes this range special.

How our first encounter went and other stories about texture

It was a cold, rainy autumn evening just before my birthday when we met the first time. Radiate + Refine had come in the morning with an order from Love Lula. As soon as darkness fell (face masks are perfect companions for a pm routine, aren't they?) I rushed to the bathroom to indulge in a beauty ritual that my Radiate + Refine Face Mask promised to make soothing and illuminating.

As I opened the jar I was (positively) overwhelmed by a turmeric scent, made less pungent by the sweet aroma of coconut milk powder. Red sandalwood is not easy for my nose to smell but it can be seen by my eyes: in the fine, light orange powder some really tiny dark orange/red specks are visible. I mixed Refine + Radiate with a small quantity of water, the same I usually need for the majority of masks – say, 15 drops for a teaspoonful of mask.

I had reckoned without the fact that there was no clay in my new orange friend and that therefore there wouldn't be anything to absorb water [you can also mix Radiate + Refine with a face mask that contains ghassoul or another type of clay – I did this some times with the OrangeCoffee Mask by Terre Verdi, another stunning indie brand made in UK, whose review you can find here]. So what I got was a very smooth orange liquid, which of course I didn't throw away but massaged onto my face and neck as if it were a cleanser and a very pleasant one indeed. Later on I realized that the Radiate + Refine Mask doesn't need much water and it's probably even better when mixed with another substance (I tried with cleansing milks/creams and yogurt) or with the tiniest amount of water (I suggest adding one drop at a time) and some drops of a face oil (possibly with castor oil, which will make the mask more creamy with its texture).

How the mask succeeded in becoming a regular guest in my routine

The endless benefits of turmeric (anti-inflammatory, soothing, anti-redness and much more), of red sandalwood (it soothes and tightens skin, plus it absorbs excess sebum) and of coconot milk powder (rich in beneficial substances for the skin like vitamins A and C, calcium, iron, copper and natural proteins, it has excellent anti-aging properties in that it improves elasticity and helps get a smooth complexion) are visible on my skin each time I use Radiate + Refine. This usually happens the day after using the mask. Immediately after its use my skin usually becomes a bit red (even if there's no real inflammation). I almost always use it pm because I realized that it's more effective when it has the time to act: it's like as if it keeps working on a night shift, after you remove it with warm water. I usually leave it on for ten minutes. When I mix it with something that can make it more moist and creamy I use it in the morning too and leave it on for a bit longer – because it does not dry – up to thirty minutes [in the picture below you can see it mixed with the Balm-to-Milk Cleanser by A.Florence Skincare, a gorgeous product from a stunning brand, which you can find here– I will review it soon].

It's one of those masks I don't use very often but only when I need an extra to boost some glow on my skin and I want to purify it without possibly stripping it with clays, that can be a bit aggressive at times. I would definetely recommend this mask for sensitive skin types too, since it soothes redness (especially if use at bed time). By the way its texture makes it a 2in1 product: massaging it on my skin I get a gentle scrub too.

The turmeric conundrum

Turmeric is extremely dyeing – its beautiful bright yellow pigment remains on fabrics and it's really difficult to remove (that's why it has been used for centuries as a natural colorant). Skin and nails get stained by turmeric too and it takes days to get rid of that yellow shade. The conundrum here lies in the fact that while virtually everything gets stained when I use Radiate + Refine (the sink, the stick I use to mix the mask, my sponge or cloth and, before I began using a brush to apply the mask, even my fingers got stained making my hands look like those of a Simpson,), the skin on my face has never got stained. This is mysterious (even because the mask usually stays a while on my face and a few seconds on my fingers and all the rest) but true, so be careful not to dye something you don't want to become yellow (and now The Face Mask, a comedy in two acts * enters Roberta's mother * Roberta's mother shouting: "the pink toweeeeels!!!").
