Rose & Cucumber Cleansing Oil by Mono Naturoils

I realized that sometimes I just skip the intro in which I talk about the brand that the product I am reviewing was created by, I erroneously take for granted that readers will look for more info about the brand on their own, once they're done with reading my review. Well, I don't want Mono Naturoils to be the case.
[Even if actually I already told you something about the brand here]

Mono Naturoils
Mono is a brand I cherish for many reasons. I met the brand or I'd better say Tracy, the founder, on Instagram at the beginning of 2017, she was hosting a giveaway I was so lucky to win. The first impressions were very good because besides the Radiance oil (the prize of the giveaway), Tracy sent me generous samples of other products she had already launched or she was about to lauch. I liked the prize and I liked the goodies she had sent with it. Time after time I got to talk to Tracy both under posts or privately and I discovered we share a lot as for values and ideas. Tracy has always listened to me and supported me in difficult times and I can say she is one of those persons you love even without having met. In the past (almost) two years she has sent me other gifts I truly appreciate and have been loving and I hope her brand may grow, because she deserves it.

The Creations
All Mono's products are handmade by Tracy and her husband Kevin in their studio in the English countryside, most ingredients are wild harvested, the products are vegan and free from any harsh chemicals. Each and every product is the result of a long and careful research process, Tracy and Kevin study ingredients, find the best balance between them, try and try formulas again until they think they're good enough for us to use. To reach us from their modern day botanical apothecary.

The Blind Date
Among those goodies she sent when I won the giveaway, there was a sample of a light yellow oil, with a good sweet scent, that was labelled as “cleansing oil” and which I parsimonously used until it broke one day, crashing on the ground. The oil had not been launched yet. Tracy wrote to me the ingridient list and explained to me that she had formulated it without essential oils so that even the most sensitive skins could use it. We didn't know each other by that time but that yellow oil was going to be the Rose and Cucumber Cleansing Oil!

What it contains and how it looks like
Since Rose and Cucumber is formulated without essential oils, it can be used by people with sensitive skin and by pregnant women. It's a very well balanced blend of vegetable oils with different weights and this results in a very nice texture – not too liquid or too dense – and feel on the skin – not too greasy but nourishing enough to remove dirt and makeup effectively.

This light yellow oil is a mix of:

rice bran oil → it is creamy, it helps reduce dark spots, it's great for sensitive skin
safflower oil → the king of oils when it comes to sensitive and reactive skin (it helps reduce redness)
pumpkin seed oil → it fights free radicals and is therefore a great anti-aging oil
perilla oil → this oil is used in Korean kitchen because of its high content in omega 3 fatty acids
cucumber oil → it is rich in omega 3 as well and it's also refreshing, it helps treat acne and other skin conditions, plus it helps with uneven skin tone
papaya oil → it's a non oily oil, with great anti-inflammatory properties (thanks to a component called papain), it fights pimples and blackheads
almond oil infused with rose blossoms → nourishing and soothing, plus rose makes skin plumper
vitamin E → skin's best anti-aging ingredient!

How it works and how I use it
Rose and Cucumber (like other cleansing oils) works according to the principle that like dissolves like: since impurities (made of sebum) and dirt are similar to oils, a cleansing oil will clean skin perfectly, leaving the lipid barrier intact without harming the good bacteria that live on our skin. Rose and Cucumber is particulary mild because of the oils Tracy chose to use and because of the absence of essential oils. A child could use it too! I usually need half dropper (or a whole dropper if I'm wearing makeup) to clean my face at night (even if I've used it in the morning too), I apply it with my fingers, massaging my skin for a long time and then remove everything with a cloth soaked with warm water and then well wrung. I place the cloth on my face, I breathe deeply and then gently swipe it with circular motions. Tracy sent me a wonderful bamboo cloth together with the cleansing oil but I prefer to use it to dry my face after washing, while I remove the oil with a muslin/cotton cloth.

I like it because it's effective, it's mild, it doesn't sting when used on the eye area and because it smells nice and relaxing: it's a sweet scent with fresh notes of cucumber, I'd say (no added fragrance though, it smells like the ingredients it contains).

‘When I make a word do a lot of work like that,’ said Humpty Dumpty, ‘I always pay it extra.’

Other uses and effects
Just like Humpty Dumpty pays words extra for making them work more (that is having more than one meaning), I value products extra when I give them more than one job (and they carry out it successfully)!

Many people think that cleansing oils/balms and face oils/balms belong to two different categories but actually all cleansing oils/balms that do not contain any surfactants can be used as a face oil/balm too of course. And with such a pool of ingredients like those in Rose and Cucumber, it would be a pity not to try and use it as a face oil too. So I tried and I liked it a lot: it's lightweight enough to be used by combo skin and it's nourishing enough to be used as a makeup base to avoid foundation from flaking in the driest areas. It leaves skin soft and plump and not greasy.

I also like Rose and Cucumber as an ingredient in powder masks: some powder masks perform better when mixed with an oil that is creamy enough (in my experience oils with a dry touch aren't the best addition to masks) and Rose and Cucumber has the perfect texture to be used like that. I especially enjoy it with clay-based powder masks because it helps make them less fast-drying, which results in the mask being overall more mild on skin.

Where to buy it
Mono has an online shop that works wonderfully. Tracy and Kevin are very careful in packing every order and include generous samples and handwritten notes. They sometimes offer free international shipping and/or sales, but if you feel like buying Mono products together with other nice natural products from other (indie) brands I would suggest to take a look at Mono's stockists located in Europe: So Natural Beauty (run by the very nice and kind Letizia), Love Lula (they ship worldwide and for free from 20 £) and Mon Corner B (based in France, they also ship internationally).
